Active Mediation work with young people aged 16-25 who are homeless, or potentially homeless because of the difficulties that are being experienced where they live. Even where the young person can no longer live at home, it can still be possible to develop a good relationship with other family members. Establishing or re-establishing good communication is the key. Mediation helps people discuss their concerns and looks for ways forward in a safe and structured environment.
Active Mediation provides a confidential service with professional and impartial mediators who do not take sides. We offer informal, yet structured, mediation sessions with highly trained mediators. We are independent from other organisations and services.
If you are a Preston resident, you can book a free mediation session through the following ways:
Please note: young people or family members/carers can contact Active Mediation directly if they are experiencing relationship or communication difficulties within the home. Active Mediation also accepts referrals from other agencies.
After a referral is received the mediators will visit each person involved separately. The initial visit is to hear from each person directly how the situation is for them and for the mediators to explain the mediation process.
A mediation meeting will take place in a neutral venue with the mediators there to facilitate the meeting. The mediators will ensure that each person gets an equal opportunity to speak and they will assist people to look at ways forward and possible solutions to the situation. Mediators do not make judgements, give their opinion or make suggestions. Any agreement must come from the people involved.
For mediation to work, the family members concerned must be willing to take part.
Mediation has been successful in reducing the number of young people leaving home and getting caught up in the homelessness system. It has also helped young people and their families to communicate and deal with any issues or conflict more effectively and improve family relationships.
