Since April 2005 we have collected plastic bottles. Plastic bottles should be stored in your yellow lidded recycling box.
All our waste is processed at Global renewables - Farington Waste Technology Park and there is no facility to recycle items other than plastic bottles.
Items other than plastic bottles, glass and cans should not be placed in your yellow lidded recycling box. Boxes containing other materials will not be emptied. Non-recyclable materials will contaminate the whole vehicle load of recyclable waste. Where this occurs all the material will have to go through a much more expensive treatment process and may still be landfilled.
Acceptable plastic items for the yellow lidded recycling box include:
The following plastic items should not be placed in the yellow lidded recycling box, and should be disposed of in the grey bin:
There is a high market demand for plastic bottles. They work well in the machinery used in reprocessing plants and the physical properties used are consistent enough to make reliable end products. Other types of plastic, such as yoghurt pots, margarine tubs and food trays have different physical properties and cannot be put through the same recycling process.
If you have noticed symbols on your plastic items and are not sure what they mean download our plastics guide for more information.
