The Harris Open Exhibition is an annual opportunity for local people to display their artwork. If you would like to submit, please read the details below carefully then click on the button to complete your details.

What you need to know

Handing in days

  • Wednesday 4 December 5pm until 7pm in gallery 2 on the second floor

  • Saturday 7 December 10.30am until 4pm in gallery 2 on the second floor

  • Sunday 8 December 11.30am until 3pm in gallery 2 on the second floor

  • Preview night - Friday 13 December 6pm - 8pm

Public Opening

  • Saturday 14 December

Winners announced at 7pm.

Who can enter?

The exhibition is open to all ages and abilities living or studying in the Preston City Council area or within a 5 mile radius of the Harris Museum, Art Gallery & Library.

One or two works in any medium, including painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, photography, needlework, jewellery, ceramics, audio, digital etc. Please submit recent work (produced within the last 2 years) that has not been shown in a previous Harris Open.

We will make every effort to display all art works. However, this may not be possible due to the amount of entries we receive.

How much does it cost?

Fees are as follows:

  • under 18 - free
  • Over 18s - £3
  • Groups - £3 per person

How do I present my work?

Mirror plates must be attached to all of your framed work before you bring your work to the Harris.

Please note, if mirror plates aren't attached we are unable to display your work. Please clearly mark which way up your work should be displayed, for example with an arrow on the back pointing to the top. 

We do not accept 'clip frames' as they are not secure. All work should have a label on the back with:

  1. your name
  2. title of work
  3. telephone number
  4. price, if the work is for sale

What happens if my work is sold?

You will be notified by email if your work is sold. Payment will be made by Preston City Council after the close of the exhibition.

All work will remain on display until the close of the exhibition. Your price should include 30% Gallery Commission, for example if we sell your work for £30 you will receive £21.

Is my work insured?

Your work is not insured by the Harris. It is your responsibility if you choose not to secure your work in the galleries.


Every year a panel of judges chooses 4 winners. 4 prizes are awarded:

  • 2 for under 18's (1st and highly commended) and
  • 2 for for over 18's (1st and highly commended).

Please collect your artwork on either Friday 31 January 2020, Saturday 1 February 2020 or Sunday 2 February 2020 between 10am - 4pm.

Artwork that isn't collected will be donated to local good causes. ID must be provided before your art work is released for collection.

If someone is collecting artwork on your behalf, they need to bring proof of their ID including name and address.
