The application procedure for a vehicle licence is the same for either hackney carriage or private hire. Licences are issued for a maximum period of 6 months.
Currently, the limit of 187 vehicles has been reached. As such, no further new hackney carriage vehicle licences will be issued.
Once a hackney carriage vehicle licence is licensed, it can only be driven by a hackney carriage driver, licensed by us.
There is no limit to the number of private hire vehicles licensed within Preston. Once a private hire is licensed, it can only be driven by a private hire driver, licensed by us.
You can apply for your new or renewal vehicle licence in the following ways:
Online - complete our taxi vehicle licences application form, which will also include payment
Postal - post, or deliver, the 'taxi vehicle licences application form' to the Town Hall (address at the bottom of the page). This form can be found in the documents section or collected from the Town Hall reception. Payment must be made through the licensing office on 01772 906910 (option 1) using a debit or credit card.
For current new or renewal vehicle licence fee prices please see the taxi licence fees page.
Please note that once you have had your vehicle licence for nearly 6 months, we will remind you, in writing, to renew your licence before it expires.
You will need to include a copy of the following document:
Please note that if you are applying for your licence online and do not have a digital copy of the relevant insurance certificate, you can post, or deliver, your document to the Town Hall (address at the bottom of the page). Alternatively, it can be emailed or faxed to us using the details at the bottom of the page.
You will need to make your own arrangements to have your vehicle examined and tested before we can issue you with a new or renewal vehicle licence. There are currently six approved garages to undertake taxi vehicle examinations and tests, which can be found below:
71 Longridge Road
Please note that the garage will charge you a fee for this service.
The vehicle will be subject to an MOT test and will also need to meet a number of extra standards required by the Authority. These extra testing standards are detailed in a schedule which can be viewed or downloaded from the documents section on the left of this page.
The garage will notify us of the results of the vehicle test and if the vehicle has passed, then we will receive a compliance certificate. They may also give you a copy of the certificate, together with an MOT certificate, for your own records.
Your licence, vehicle plates with associated materials, and any original documents will be available for collection from the Town Hall reception no later than 5 working days after we have received the following:
Please note that you will be contacted by a licensing technician when your licence and associated materials are ready for collection from the Town Hall (address at the bottom of the page).
