Cycle paths

Cycle paths, footpaths, bridleways and byways are all managed and maintained by Lancashire County Council. You can view all cycle routes in Preston by downloading the maps.

It is important that the cycle routes in Preston are maintained to a good standard. If you would like to report a defect on a cycle route contact engineers@preston.gov.uk 01772 906000 (if the defect is on the road then please contact Lancashire County Council highways on 08450 530011) .

Guild wheel cycleway

Preston Guild Wheel is a 21 mile greenway that encircles the city's perimeter. The Guild Wheel route makes the most of the different landscapes that surround the city, creating a rich and varied environment for everyone to enjoy.

Lancashire County Council Countryside Service

Lancashire has a network of 3,716 miles of public rights of way, including 240 miles of Bridleways. Lancashire County Council Countryside Service has a statutory responsibility for these Public Rights of Way.

These responsibilities include:

  • Signposting and waymarking of footpaths, bridleways and byways.
  • The updating and continuous review of public rights of way on the definitive map which is the official legal record of public rights of way.
  • Maintaining the surface of a right of way to a standard appropriate for the purpose for which the highway is used. Walkers should, however, be prepared to use boots in poor weather.
  • Maintaining bridges over natural river courses.
  • Making grants to landowners of 25% of the cost of maintaining approved stiles and bridle gates.
  • Administering the law concerning rights of way and in particular ensuring that they can be used by the public.
