European City of Sport 2012

What is European City of Sport?

European City of Sport is awarded by the European Capital of Sport Association (ACES). The award is based around 5 key objectives:

• Enjoying exercise
• Experiencing community
• Learning of fair play
• Willingness to achieve
• Improving health

Support our aim

Our aim is to hold 100 European City of Sport events in 2012. We are looking for schools, clubs and communities to rise to this challenge and register sporting events under the European City of Sport banner.

So far the designation has attracted a number of headline events such as the annual MWR Sports Awards and Sports Relief. With over 50 events already registered, the designation promises to provide a wealth of activity in 2012, which will encourage greater participation and, ultimately, a healthier population.

2012 is the year for sport on both a local and national scale. Be part of the sporting legacy and register your event!

Why Preston was awarded European City of Sport 2012

The award was initiated through an application submitted by Preston City Council and four principal partners: Preston City Council, UCLan, Preston College and NHS Central Lancashire.

Following the application, ACES visited the city to conduct an assessment. This provided the opportunity to demonstrate the positive impact of sport and physical activity on the local community. Through meeting supportive partners, observing inclusive sporting initiatives/programmes, visiting core facilities and feeling the passion for sport across the city - assessors were undoubtedly impressed by the merits of the application.
