Wards are areas of the city that have been established for the purposes of administration and elections for local councillors. Preston is made up of a total of 22 wards each containing an average population of around 6000 people.
The files on this page provide a wealth of information about Preston's wards across various themes. The following provides a brief description of the data each file contains.
Childhood Obesity: Data from surveys in 2009/10 and shows the percentage of children in each of Preston’s wards that are either of Healthy Weight, Obese, Overweight, or Underweight. Data covers both reception and year six classes.
Crime: Data showing the levels of crime in Preston's wards. Data shows the total number and rate per 1,000 population of each crime type. Data shown relates to April to November 2011 with April to November 2010 included as a comparison. The specific types of crimes included are Criminal Damage, Drug Offences, and Other Crimes with other being added shortly.
Fire: Data showing for each Lower Layer Super Output Area (a small subdivision of a ward where each ward has between three and six) the number of ADF (Accidental Dwelling Fires), and the number of deliberate primary (generally involving property) and secondary fires (minor fires such as the burning of rubbish). Data refers to all fires during 2010/11.
GCSEs: This document shows the percentage of students in each of Preston’s wards achieving 5 GCSE graded C or above, 0.5 or 1 GCSE at grade G or above, and those gaining no GCSEs in exams in 2010.
Health: This documents contains three sheets:
Home Occupancy: Shows the number and percentage of homes in each ward and their occupancy (Lived in, second home, empty). Data taken from the 2001 census.
Home Ownership: Shows the number and percentage of homes in each ward and their ownership status (mortgaged, rented, etc). Data taken from the 2001 census.
IMD Ward Profiles: Shows the average scores for each ward in Preston alongside the national rank for each theme of the index of deprivation in both 2010 and 2007 and the change between years. The index of multiple deprivation shows the relative deprivation in each ward with smaller numbers indicating less deprivation.
Job Centre Plus Vacancies: This dataset shows the number of job vacancies in each of Preston’s wards from July to September 2011.
Job Seekers Allowance: This data shows the number of people claiming job seekers allowance in each of Preston’s wards between July and September 2011 alongside the percentage of the ward's working age population (age 16-64).
Long Term Empty Properties: This dataset shows the number and proportion of housing properties that are listed as empty in each of Preston’s wards and as a percentage of the total housing stock in 2011.
Under 18 conception rate: This dataset shows the number of under 18 conceptions in each of Preston’s wards as well as the rate per 1,000 females aged 15-17 in 2006-08.
Ward Level Population Estimates Estimates of the population levels of Preston's wards of males and females and combined and across different age groups. Data relates to mid-year 2009.

Working age: This sheet shows the number of people in each of Preston’s wards claiming working age benefits (job seekers allowance, income support, incapacity benefit, disability income allowance, etc) alongside the percentage of the total working age population (aged 16-64) in February 2011.
