Dog Control

We deal with public complaints around dog issues. We also monitor parks, open spaces and areas known to be used by dog walkers. This is to educate, advise and, in some cases, take action against dog owners who are not following responsible dog ownership laws.

To find out about current dog control orders see dog laws in Preston.

Report a dog problem

We investigate the following:

  • Stray dogs
  • Lost dogs
  • Dog fouling
  • Aggressive dogs
  • Dogs not on a lead

Please note: we do not investigate issues surrounding banned dogs or dog cruelty.
To report either of these issue contact the police on 101. For emergencies dial 999.

Responsible dog ownership

We also play an important role in promoting responsible dog ownership by:

  • Providing free dog microchipping
  • Organising dog groups and educational events at local schools and community centres
  • Empowering local residents to make a difference by becoming canine volunteers

New dog microchipping laws

From 1 April 2016 it became law that every dog in England must be microchipped. We have powers to check that dogs are microchipped and if necessary fine owners who haven't microchipped their dogs. For more information see dog microchipping .

Please note: It is also law that your dog wears a collar and tag to ensure stray dog can be quickly identified and owners contacted.
