This page tells you all about the services our Park rangers offer and about ground maintenance. If you want to stay up to date on all things relating to parks and street scene see our brand new twitter account @Parks_Streets
The Park Rangers carry out practical conservation work, environmental education, organise events and activities and they are the front line guardians of the ecology of the parks, seeking to protect wildlife, encourage bio-diversity and promote sustainable development.
The park rangers work with the local community to develop the parks through park Friends groups and encourage the use of the parks as a recreational and lifestyle resource. They also work with local schools to help develop and educate our young people. This enables the children to learn more about their local environment as well as enhance their learning experience.
All our park rangers are first aid trained and are CRB checked.
We now have a number of volunteer rangers who help with a variety of tasks. If you would like to volunteer contact the Parks Service on 01772 906471.
We cut the grass on all council parks and open spaces. Bad weather can delay cutting and extended dry weather may make cutting unnecessary. We no longer cut the grass on the highways grass verges which are the responsibility of Lancashire County Council.
Any queries regarding grass verges should be referred to them on 08450 530000. We do not maintain the green spaces on Gateway Housing estates, these are now the responsibility of Gateway.
We look after the hedges owned by the council. Lancashire County Council is responsible for keeping the footpaths and roads clear of overhanging vegetation, including from people’s hedges. To report overgrown hedges and trees on a highway contact Lancashire County Council on 08450 530000.
Litter and dog bins on parks and open spaces are emptied by us. We also deal with fly tipping on parks and in shrub areas. To report a problem on parks and shrub beds please ring 01772 906471 or use the Report a park problem form. To report litter/fly-tipping in other locations please contact the Litter Line on 01772 906909 or Report a grot spot.
We provide hanging and barrier baskets in the city centre, flowerbeds in parks and open spaces, internal decorations in council buildings and floral decorations for special events.
