If you live in Preston with a garden, you may wish to apply for our garden waste collection service. Garden waste is collected in brown bins.
You can also use your brown bin for your real Christmas Tree. Just chop your tree down so that it fits in your bin and present it for collection as normal.
Remember your brown bin collection time may vary throughout the year. Please ensure your bin is presented for collection by 7.00am on your collection day and is returned to your property as soon as possible after collection.
In colder weather the contents of your brown bin may freeze causing difficulty emptying it. Please ensure that material in your bin is loose when you present it for collection.
The new garden waste service will be introduced from July 2016 and we can continue composting your garden waste should you sign up to the new service. However you can no longer use your brown bin for food waste this should be disposed of in your grey bin or composted at home.
If you put food waste in with your garden waste it has to be sent to special indoor composting facilities, where the composting takes place at an increased temperature. This is necessary to kill any bacteria in the food waste and control the potential spread of disease such as foot and mouth.
Food waste accounts for around 1% of the mixed food and green waste and there are more cost effective options available to deal with green waste if the food waste is removed.
The indoor facilities we used have closed and Lancashire County Council has saved money by taking your garden waste to an outdoor composting facility.
