The amazing worldwide phenomenon known as Freecycle TM started in Tucson, Arizona in 2003 by Deron Beal. Freecycle harnesses the power of the internet to connect people who have stuff to throw away with others in their area who would like that stuff, so it doesn't wind up in a landfill.
We all have things in our garages, closets, attics, offices, etc.., that we don't need. Freecycle lets you find someone who does. No item is too big or too small but all must be 100% free with no strings attached.
A perfect consumer/earth friendly circle is no overhead, no money, no waste and no catch. After all, there is no point in throwing something away when it still has good life in it or it can be of use to someone else. So don't take that stuff to the tip - share it with your community instead!
There are now thousands of Freecycle groups across the world, each one is run by a small group of volunteer owners and moderators, but all are linked by one organisation.
The groups are set up through Yahoo! Groups and are very easy to use. You basically post what you are offering with a location so that other members know where you are and can ask for your items (e.g. the Preston group).
You are also able to ask for other people's items, and everything is free!
Members can post wanteds for items if they're looking for something in particular. So whether you're setting up home and need household items; down sizing and want to rehome some of your furniture; wanting to get rid of larger items (i.e. beds, wardrobes) without hiring someone to remove them for you, or just wanting to be a part of a community project that shares and helps the environment - visit the Preston Freecycle Group website.
Please note that the biggest problem we have with new members applying is that a lot of people do not realise that they've signed up with a Yahoo! email address and get rejected when they don't respond to our initial email reply. Please email the group moderators from the group if you have any problems/questions.
EcoBees are a worldwide movement of people who are giving, receiving, swapping and sharing stuff for free in their own towns and cities.
Whilst keeping good stuff out of landfills is a clear priority, EcoBees do not just focus on this. EcoBees have widened that scope to include reusing / recycling and giving anything (as long as it's legal and not classed as an offensive weapon).
Remember, everything offered must be free!
Visit the EcoBees website for more information.
