The Data Protection Act 1998

The Data Protection Act 1998 came into force on 1 March 2000. Its purpose is to protect information about individuals and to enforce a set of standards for the processing of such information. This places responsibilities and liabilities on those who process personal data (Preston City Council as the data user).

This act affects every citizen of Preston and every employee of Preston City Council, as most of our information is held electronically or in structured manual records.

If these records contain personal data then we must be very careful to whom we disclose the information. If the information is disclosed, even accidentally, Preston City Council and the officer can be held liable under the act.
