Beacon Status

Established in 1999, the Beacon Scheme identifies excellence and innovation in local government over 10 selected categories. Sponsored by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) and run by the Improvement & Development Agency (IDeA), it does so in order that best value authorities can learn from each other and deliver high quality services to all.

Preston City Council secured Beacon status in 2006 in the seventh round of the scheme, where an original pool of 239 applications has been whittled down to just 61 Beacon Awards.

Receiving this prestigious national award recognises the service as an example of good practice and reflects not only the dedication and hard work shown by Neighbourhood Services but also the overwhelming public support for recycling.
