Welcome to Preston City Council's Park Service. Preston boasts a rich mosaic of urban parks and open spaces that are enjoyed and valued by local people and visitors to the City alike. Preston City Council is committed to protecting, developing and managing the City's Parks and Open Spaces and has structured this long term commitment into Preston's new and available Parks and Open Spaces Strategy. In the early 19th Century Preston was little more that a market town of barely 2000 people. Industrialisation brought with it prosperity, jobs and people. As demand for good quality green spaces was brought about by the expansion and development of the urban landscape, formal parks, civic gardens and green spaces were strategically placed within the streetscape to breathe new life into the build environment and give people the opportunity to break free from the hustle and bustle of town life. Throughout the last century, the Council has acquired pockets of land that equate to around 500 hectares.
