Fly tipping in back alley

The Mayor of Preston is set to unveil the ‘make-over’ of a number of back alleys in the Deepdale area of Preston.

During the last six weeks, back streets in Deepdale have been subject to the ‘Watch Your Backs Campaign’ designed to help local residents keep their back alleys free from fly tipping.

Over the years, Preston City Council’s street cleaners have had the difficult task of dealing with fly tipping in back alleys. Enforcement Officers at Preston City Council developed a community action campaign to improve Preston’s back alleys, and following its success in the Fishwick and Frenchwood areas, the campaign has now been rolled out in Deepdale.

The work is all part of a bid to demonstrate the appeal of these communal areas, and ensure that residents continue to take responsibility for their own back streets, asking them not to dump their waste in these areas but instead make full use of the weekly waste collection service provided.

Residents are invited to the communal back alley between Bullfinch Street and Holmrook Road at 2pm on Thursday 14th January to see the transformation of this communal area. As well as the official opening by the Mayor of Preston, Councillor Keith Sedgewick, residents from Deepdale will also have the chance take part in a free prize draw to win garden centre and DIY vouchers, and hanging baskets to help improve their own communal areas or back yards.

Anne Millne-Riley, Litter Education Officer at Preston City Council said: “The idea is to create an opportunity to demonstrate to local residents how attractive these communal areas can be, and our Parks Department have kindly agreed to dress the area with planting and benches to show the area off at its best.

“The campaign is well underway in this particular area of Preston, and we want to show residents and interested parties how valuable these communal areas are.

“By involving residents throughout we hope to improve the conditions of the alley ways in Deepdale and improve the environment for all residents.

“In an area with few gardens, these back streets could provide a great area for residents to sit out and for children to play safely away from traffic.”
