Grass cutting

Park maintenance

We cut the grass on all council parks and open spaces, with a target of 14 cuts between March and October. However, continued bad weather can delay cutting and extended dry weather may make cutting unnecessary. We also cut the grass on highway verges on behalf of Lancashire County Council (LCC). Any queries regarding grass verges should be referred to LCC on 08450 530000.

Shrub beds

Council maintained shrub and rose beds are pruned between October and March. Some shrubs are cut at other times if they are causing a sightline problem for traffic, or have overgrown a footpath. Weeds in shrub beds are sprayed as necessary between March and October, and litter picking is carried out as and when required.

Hedges

Hedges provide a plentiful and varied habitat for a wide range of wildlife. The Horticulture Service team look after the hedges owned by the council. Lancashire County Council is responsible for keeping the footpaths and roads clear of overhanging vegetation, including from people’s hedges. To report overgrown hedges and trees on a highway contact Lancashire County Council on 08450 530000.

Cemetery

We provide a grounds maintenance and burial service to Preston Cemetery and carry out grounds maintenance at Preston crematorium on behalf of Environmental Health..

Litter

Litter and dog bins on parks and open spaces are emptied by ourselves. We also deal with fly tipping on parks and in shrub areas. To report litter/flytipping on parks and shrub beds please ring 01772 906141. To report litter/flytipping in other locations please contact the Litter Line on 01772 906909.
