Through the hard work of our dedicated staff, the parks and green spaces of Preston are constantly being improved. As a result, we continue to be recognised for the quality services we are providing by winning the coveted Green Flag Award, the nationally recognised quality standard for parks. This year (2008-09) we have achieved Green Flag status at:
- Grange Park
- Haslam Park
- Fishwick Recreation Ground
- Avenham and Miller Parks.
This means these parks are well managed and have satisfied an inspection which considers the following criteria:
- A welcoming place
- Healthy, safe and Secure
- Clean and well maintained
- Sustainability
- Conservation and heritage
- Community involvement
- Marketed and publicity
- Management
Grange Park has won the Green Flag every year since 2003!

The Green Flag Award is the national standard for parks and green spaces and is run by the Civic Trust. The award scheme began in 1996 as a means of recognising and rewarding the best green spaces in the country. It is also seen as a way of encouraging others to achieve the same high environmental standards, creating a benchmark of excellence in recreational green areas. The awards are given on an annual basis and winners must apply each year to renew their Green Flag status.
Over recent years the council’s parks department has worked closely with the organisers of the Green Flag scheme, and our twin town of Almelo in Holland to take the Award outside the UK for the first time and this resulted in two parks in Almelo being awarded Green Flag status in 2008 and representatives from the town came to the Award ceremony in Liverpool in the summer of 2008 to receive their Flags.
