Allotment produce

Allotment gardening provides a wide range of benefits to communities and the environment.

Apart from providing low cost food, allotments are a great way of meeting like minded people and also taking exercise. As well as the enjoyment of growing your own produce, growing your own also means that you are doing your bit for the environment, helping to reduce the energy use and pollution from the transport and packaging of shop bought food. Allotments are also significant to our green spaces and provide habitats for many forms of wildlife.

Waiting Lists

Allotments are being reinvigorated, through media, organic foods and environmental concerns and this means that at the moment we have long waiting lists (approximately  three years) for all our allotment sites in Preston.

Allotment produce

The council's prime responsibility is the provision of allotments for residents living within the administrative boundaries of the City of Preston.  If you live outside of the boundary (eg South Ribble) we will not be able to offer you a plot on any site until there are no Preston residents on our lists, and we would advise you to contact the allotment service within your own administrative authority.

Due to already large waiting lists and slow turn round of plots, Haslam Park and Sharoe Green sites are closed to new applications for the time being. If you wish to be placed on the waiting lists for other sites please either complete an allotment waiting list form and send it to us or contact us by telephone or e mail, the contact details are shown on the right hand side of this page.

competition judging

In an effort to reduce the waiting time for an allotment plot, where possible, as plots become vacant they are being halved and each half will be offered as a regular plot.  In exceptional circumstances where it is not possible to halve a plot this will be let as a large plot .

Cost of renting an allotment

Plots are charged from April to March each year. The  cost of renting a regular plot for new tenants for 2009-10 is £30 pa with a 50% reduction for senior citizens, registered disabled and registered unemployed; proof of benefit is required to claim a reduction. The cost for the larger plots will be £45 with the same 50% reduction. This reduction only applies to one plot.
