Consultation:

The City Council is undertaking a programme of review of its 11 existing Conservation Areas over the next few years. As part of that process it is seeking views of the local community on what they see as special about each of the conservation areas and how the protection and enhancement of that special character needs to be managed in the future. As part of the review process the Council will be looking to see whether the existing boundary of the conservation area needs to be changed in any way.
The final version of the appraisal that is adopted by the Council will include a summary of the responses from the consultation and the views of the public have been taken into account in defining the special interest of the area.

- The site of the major civic buildings of the 19th century and early 20th century – Harris Museum (Grade I), Sessions House (Grade II*), Town Hall and former Head Post Office (Grade II).
- Market Square forms the setting for the Cenotaph and restored Market Obelisk.
