Overview
Preston City Council has 57 councillors – two or three for each of the 22 wards into which Preston is divided. The councillors are elected by registered voters in their wards. This page explains the role of a councillor, as well as how you can find and contact your local councillor.
Contacting my councillor
Each ward has 2 or 3 councillors, you may contact councillor for your ward. All councillors have e-mail addresses and their details show other ways you can contact them, usually by post and telephone.

Councillors' surgeries
Some councillors hold surgeries so you can meet a councillor and discuss an issue face-to-face. It is best to contact your local councillor direct to see when surgeries are held.
What is a councillor's role?
- Councillors have to balance the needs and interests of their residents, voters, political parties and the Council. All these groups make legitimate demands on Councillors time on top of their personal responsibilities to family, workplace and friends.
- Our councillors broadly carry out the following duties:
- To contribute to good governance and actively encourage community participation and citizen involvement in decision-making
- To represent the interests of the ward
- To deal with constituents' enquiries and representations, fairly and without prejudice
- Meet regularly with key local stakeholders
- Listen to the needs of local people and key stakeholders to take their views into account when considering policy proposals and in decision-making
- To participate in the activities of any outside body to which they are appointed and report back to the council
- To champion the causes which further the interests, quality of life and sustainable development of the community
- Develop a working knowledge of the organisations, services, activities and other factors important to the community's well-being and identity.
