As part of the Preston, South Ribble and Lancashire City Deal there is a programme to improve a number of key local centres and gateways into Preston.
Work has started on New Hall Lane with the first tree pit being installed at the end of Great Townley Street. A tree pit is a large underground chamber filled with a specialised tree soil which will help the new trees thrive. The pit will eventually be covered with granite paving so that all you see above ground is the tree itself. It will take a number of weeks to install all 12 tree pits, however other work will be starting soon to ensure the project moves on.
Preparation work has been going on too so that construction of the road junctions between New Hall Lane and the side streets to the north can begin towards the end of May. More information will follow on this soon.
A member of the highways construction team from Lancashire County Council has been visiting businesses individually over the past couple of weeks to discuss the work and any concerns businesses may have. If you haven't yet been visited then please be assured that you haven’t been forgotten and someone will be calling to meet you soon.
A number of residents have contacted us who are concerned about being asked to use the rear entrance to their house while work is being undertaken. This request is a suggestion which some people may find an easier or preferable option while work is happening right outside their house.
However, if you wish to continue using your front door as normal throughout the scheme then please do so. We will be making sure you can use your doorway and the disruption outside your house will only be for a short while, not for the whole duration of the construction works.

Further to consultation on the plans for New Hall Lane redevelopment, carried out in March 2015, we wanted to share the results and responses. We received 58 questionnaire responses, plus lots of comments on Facebook. In September 2015, consultation was also carried out with New Hall Lane business owners. A total of 17 responses was received.
Whilst two thirds of the main consultation questionnaire responses were positive or neutral to the scheme, there were some issues and concerns. They were:
