A hackney carriage is a public transport vehicle with no more than eight passenger seats, which is licensed to stand at ranks or be hailed in the street by members of the public.
Private hire vehicles too must have no more than eight passenger seats but they must be booked in advance by customers through an operator and may not be hailed for hire in the street.
The Equality Act 2010 includes many of the taxi and private hire vehicle (PHV) provisions which were in the Disability Discrimination Act 1995, but it also includes some important changes.
