Safety management is key to the performance of your business. Companies with good health and safety management systems are usually profitable and competitive in the market place.
There are five steps to a safety management system;
Your health and safety policy should influence all of your work activities, including the selection of people, equipment and materials, the way the work is done and how you design and provide goods and services. A written statement of your policy should include a statement, an organisation and arrangements for health and safety.
To make your health and safety policy effective you need to get your staff involved and committed. This is often referred to as a "positive safety culture". You have a statutory duty to consult with your staff, therefore it is beneficial to go about this in an effective manner.
Planning for health and safety, is the same as planning for other business needs, it involves setting objectives, identifying hazards, assessing risks, implementing standards of performance and developing a positive culture. You should record your pans in writing.
Just as in sales, finance and production you need to measure performance to see how successful you are.
There are essentially two monitoring systems;
Monitoring provides the information to let you review activities and decide how to improve performance. Things to look at include, Audit reports, Accidents statistics, staff absences and deciding if you have achieved the targets set in step 3. This should be undertaken including the very top persons within the company e.g. the owner or managing director.
