After sending my thanks to the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service in my last blog, I have been fortunate enough to spend sometime with the team and learn more about the work that they do.
Last week I was invited to Deepdale Fire Station for an impromptu visit. Not only did I get to have a look around the facilities, I was also able to shadow the ‘Red Watch’ team as they went about their training. After meeting the fire officers, I watched as they were assigned their duties and did a practice run through a mock house fire, where the building was completely filled with smoke and had to be tackled like a real emergency.
We also went to the Red Scar industrial estate for a response and rescue demonstration of a road traffic accident. Partly a tutorial and partly a demonstration it was fascinating to watch, as one brave member of council staff was ‘rescued’ from a car!
My time with the fire service proved to be an extremely interesting day; the team was a pleasure to meet and featured a range of different talents, including one young lady who has an Olympic gold medal for boxing. It was also a great opportunity to get involved with one of the services that we too often take for granted.
