As you can imagine, I’m pleased the City Council has been judged as performing well by local government watchdog – the Audit Commission.

This is no easy task and the Comprehensive Area Assessment (as it is called) is a tough and rigorous assessment and Preston has genuinely done well.

People may not always believe us, but as a council we do work really hard to deliver good quality and value for money services. We can now boast five green flag parks, have some of the best leisure centres in the UK, run award winning community engagement teams and are one of the best councils in the UK for recycling.

The council is also trying harder to focus more on what is important to local people like crime and community safety, clean streets, better health and employment.

Make no mistake there is still a lot of work to do and I am under no illusions as to the challenges we face as a community and as a city. Long term unemployment and poor health are key issues in Preston and we will continue to work with all partners to put these to the top of our agenda.

I can assure you that fellow Councillors and council officers are totally committed to doing the very best they can to make Preston an even prouder city. So whilst I’m pleased no one will be resting on their laurels here!
