Winckley Square

Winckley Square is situated near the centre of Preston, at the west end of Avenham. It lies between Avenham Park and Preston's main shopping street, Fishergate.

The square was built in 1801 by Thomas Winckley as an exclusive residential area for the town's gentry. It is now occupied mostly by business offices, although some residential developments have recently been made.

The square's gardens, now an open public park, originally consisted of private plots, each owned by a resident.

Earlier in the year  a competition was set for designers to redevelop the space.

The winning design, by Cooper Partnership, will feature granite walkways, seating, new lighting and creative sculptures and metal artwork.

Once redeveloped, the space hopes to attract more people to use the square as a link between the city centre and the recently restored Avenham and Miller parks.
