- In the 1960’s he made his west end theatre debut in Ann Veronica at the Cambridge theatre
- First television performance was in an episode of ‘Two in Clover’ in 1970
- Played Mr.Humphries in the BBC sitcom ‘Are you being served’ (1972 – 1985) and won BBC TV personality of the year for this role
- Later on he became a well known pantomime dame
- He died of Hepatitis A in 2007
