  • Made his first debut on stage at the South Pier in Blackpool at the age of 13 in melodrama ‘Freda’
  • In the 1960’s he made his west end theatre debut in Ann Veronica at the Cambridge theatre
  • First television performance was in an episode of ‘Two in Clover’ in 1970
  • Played Mr.Humphries in the BBC sitcom ‘Are you being served’ (1972 – 1985) and won BBC TV personality of the year for this role
  • Later on he became a well known pantomime dame
  • He died of Hepatitis A in 2007
